Dear Parents,
The Carteret Middle School serves approximately 900 students in grades six through eight. Our shared vision is to create a highly regarded, safe, and supportive middle school that fosters high levels of student achievement, as well as productive and responsible members in a diverse society. We believe that a superior educational program is built on a strong foundation of high academic expectations, innovative and research based instructional practices, positive behavior/social interactions, and extensive parental involvement. This type of learning environment stimulates growth in all avenues of academic, social, and emotional development.
In Carteret, we have adopted a Middle School Reform Model with each grade level divided into smaller teams referred to as "Houses". Each house has its own identity with many opportunities to celebrate successes and to compete academically, athletically and behaviorally. Teachers, guidance counselors, administration and support staff meet regularly for cooperative planning to allow for supportive and productive collaboration. All staff have been trained and engage in professional learning communities.
A comprehensive core curriculum is offered at the Carteret Middle School including Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language, Creative Writing, Computer Technology, ESL and Bilingual Education. Occupational and Physical Therapy, Speech, Specialized Reading Programs, Guidance, and Intervention and Referral Services are available to students. Strong Art and Music programs are offered with many performance and exhibition opportunities during the year. Core subjects are taught in double period blocks to facilitate effective instruction. Carteret Middle School continues to be technologically rich permeating across the curriculum. Wireless internet access is available throughout the school with over 150 laptops in use as well as I-Pods, Promethean and Smart Boards.
Extra-Curricular activities include Student Council, Yearbook, The Green Team, Odyssey of the Mind, Math Olympiad, wrestling, girls and boys basketball, as well as dances, a talent show, a variety show and a cultural festival. The Carteret Arts & Sports Academy is a free, funded after-school program for our students. The program offers a wide range of academic enrichment, sports and arts activities, field trips, special guest artist presentations and family educational support services.
The Middle School offers an outstanding and supportive environment for student's academic and emotional growth so that they can develop into young adults who will continue to be life-long learners that demonstrate the character traits of independence, respect and dignity. A highly dedicated faculty of qualified teachers, a student-centered school atmosphere, and a progressive, challenging curriculum provide the synergy that makes the Carteret Middle School and exciting place to grow and learn.
Sincerely,
Mary Spiga, Principal
