Dear Columbus School Students, Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I hope you have all had a relaxing and restful summer. Columbus School is a diverse community of approximately 750 students in grades PreK-5. I am honored to continue to serve Columbus School as your Principal and excited for a new school year! I look forward to collaborating with all of you in order to ensure that this school year is not only a fantastic one, but one to remember.
This year, we have several new and exciting changes and initiatives at Columbus School. First, I want to welcome and introduce our new Vice Principal, Michele Sabrey. Ms. Sabrey has been employed by the Carteret School District for over 27 years. She served the district as a Media Specialist before becoming an administrator in 2013. Secondly, we have added two new Kindergarten Homerooms and gave each Pre-K and Kindergarten student an IPad to assist with their instructional program. Currently, our district has provided Chromebooks for all students in Grades 1-5. Lastly, as a district, we will continue with the implementation of several programs, including Readers’ Workshop, Responsive Classrooms, SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words), and Words Their Way. We have also incorporated Social Emotional Learning periods into the students’ schedules this year, in order to assist students in managing their emotions during this difficult time.
All of these initiatives are singularly focused on helping us reach our school and district goals:
- Improving student achievement in mathematics and literacy
- Implementing high levels of rigorous instructional practices and classroom design that support high levels of student academic discourse in a hybrid or virtual learning model.
- Developing instructional practices with emphasis on equity and social and racial equity and relevance.
- Building Rambler Pride
Thank you in advance for partnering with us to ensure our students have a successful school year! At Columbus School, we are committed to providing a high quality, rigorous, and personalized education to each one of our students. It is truly my pleasure and privilege to work with such exceptional and inspiring educators and community members who give their all every single day! While we have much work to do to reach our goals, I am confident that with our hard working students, staff and supportive parents, we will continue to make Columbus School an outstanding place to learn and grow. My door is always open and ideas are welcomed. Once again, welcome back! I look forward to seeing you on Zoom or when we return to in-person instruction! Let’s have an extraordinary school year!
