Mrs. Carolyn Welch
Hello and welcome to my Teacher Page!
My name is Mrs. Welch, and I am a Reading Interventionist at Columbus School. A little bit about me: This is my 22nd year teaching in the Carteret School District! I happily grew up in Carteret (as did both of my parents, and their parents as well)! I graduated from Carteret High School in 1998 and then went to Rowan University, where I knew I would study to become a teacher. I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I could start talking. I graduated from college with a BA in Elementary Education and a BA in History. After graduation, I substituted for several months before I was given my first job as a Basic Skills Teacher at Nathan Hale School. I then taught computers for a few years and then became a First Grade Teacher. In 2009, I went over to Columbus School, where I taught 3rd Grade and eventually became a reading Interventionist!
For the past 8 years, I have been an Academic Enrichment Teacher for our RTI(Response to Intervention) program. RTI is a reading instructional model our district uses to address individual needs in learning how to read. About 8 years ago, I was trained in the Orton Gillngham Program, which is a program that uses multisensory strategies to teach phonics skills and fluency skills. I was also trained to teach the LLI program and the Learning Without Tears program, which are both programs that use intense guided reading and phonics instruction to teacher different reading strategies. By looking at test scores and other data, I will use one of these many programs to help your child be a more successful reader. I am looking forward to a great year!!
