The program I will be using to teach your child is called the Orton-Gillingham Program. This program focuses on improving reading, writing and spelling skills . It will provide a solid phonics approach that is multisensory, systematic, structured, sequential, cumulative and success oriented.
Our English language has two components, phonetic words, which can be sounded out, and non-phonetic words, which are considered sight word, and must be memorized through multi-sensory techniques. Phonetic concepts will be taught each week. Once concepts are taught, students will apply them in words, sentences and stories. Sight words will be given each week and must be studied daily in order to be successful in mastering how to both read and write each word. The goal of the program is that once students learn how to phonetically sound out words and memorize how to read and write sight words, the students will grow as independent, fluent readers.
